Arrowfield Church, Virginia, 9 May 1864

"...the shot and shell flew over us like thunder. It was a fearful volley of shot and shell falling in every direction...Now the fight began in earnst with rebel shells raining down on us spreading death and destruction on our ranks. Bullets ripped thrugh the trees and over our heads. The young lad next to me was shot thrugh the lungs and I heard the bullet going thrugh him. The bullets make a sickeng thud when smashing through flesh and bone...our boys had fallen one by one and some with frightful injuries. One lad on our line had his head split open like a ripe melon, brains on the ground next to him."
