They were flanked and overrun in early morning fog with 16 killed, 60 wounded, and 69 captured, a total of 145 men. It was here that most of the 23rd Mass was captured, including General Heckman. Less fortunate was Private Joseph Eaton of Company K, who was killed in action on 16 May 1864.
