American Civil War "Indian Bread" or Hardtack

This is a round variation of the standard Northern Army Hardtack. It is approximately 4 and one-quarter inches in diameter, being about three-eighths of an inch thick. It has identification on the front and was found in this 1880's period shadow box frame. This piece is inked with the date, location and unit name. The 1st Scott Life Guards were organized by company in New York City in early May of 1861, later becoming the 4th NY Regiment of Infantry. The unit was stationed in the Baltimore, Maryland region from July 1861 to June 1862. As part of the 2nd Corp Army of the Potomac, the 4th participated in the Battle of Antietam, suffering large losses in the assault at the "Bloody Lane." The unit went on to serve at Fredericksburg, in the "Mud March," and at Chancellorsville, prior to being mustered out of service in late May 1863.
