Collided Bullets

Collided Bullets, View 1

Here are two Civil War 3-ring .58 Minie Rifle-Musket bullets fused together after hitting in a mid-air collision during the heat of battle. As a child growing up in Southern Pennsylvania, I can remember visiting the small museums of Gettysburg and being in awe after viewing another rare set of similar bullets.

Collided Bullets, View 2

In a letter home from John E. Lewis, Company K, 25th Massachusetts Infantry, he states, "The shot and shell flew over us like thunder. It was a fearful volley of shot and shell falling in every direction. The order to advance came and on we pushed all while firing with great rapidity until our muskets grew hot...Bullets ripped thrugh the trees and over our heads. The young lad next to me was shot thrugh the lungs and I heard the bullet going thrugh him. The bullets make a sickeng thud when smashing through flesh and bone."
